The Young Treasures for
Children and Youth
In
2003 Embrace The Moon opened a program for young children. Because
traditional children’s programs reside in more physically based
arts such as Karate, Kung Fu, Judo, and Aikido, we had no archetype
for teaching young American children these slow, ancient practices.
We ourselves believed that these practices were perhaps better suited
for older people. However, we were compelled to respond to a need
that our adult students were asking us to address: Can you teach my
children to be calm and centered? To our delight, these children,
aged 5 ½ to 9, have become some of our most enthusiastic and
devoted students. “I love my Embrace The Moon class!”
parents tell us they say. And, at 5-10 minutes per class of seated
and standing meditation, complete with books on their heads to keep
their spines straight, we hear they meditate longer than their parents
do! Our classes combines aerobic exercise that strengthens their bodies
and improves self-esteem, stretching exercises that keep their young
bodies supple, animal forms that develop their hand-eye coordination,
“ukemi” (rolling practice from Judo and Aikido) that erases
physical and emotional fears of falling, meditation for quiet hearts
and minds, and interactive practices derived from Taijiquan and Aikido
for developing sensitivity, intuition, and self-confidence. Bring
your children to our Taijiquan and Qigong children’s class and
they will have a great time!

The Strong Treasures
The Strong Treasures, beginning Spring 2007,
addresses the growth of our Children’s program, The Young Treasures.
Many of our children have been studying for 1-3 years and have acquired
the basic skills of mind, heart and body to move into more formalized
Internal Arts training. What does this mean? They can do sitting meditation
for 15 minutes; they can do standing meditation for 10. They are skilled
at basic Aikido/Judo conditioning and ukemi, partnership drills, basic
Tai Chi and staff. How many of us can say that! And remember, they
are 4-9. The Strong Treasures program will allow new older students
and ongoing students who have become a little older a dedicated time
every week to advance - strengthening & deepening their skills
in a more structured way that suits their age & development. This
will be a time that will encourage an intentional unification of heart,
mind, and body that will carry them into their teens and adulthood.
Ages 9 up for new students or, if younger then a minimum of 1 year
of the Young Treasures Program.
