From the Ground Up: Understanding the Base of Support
with Lori Coleman-Brown, MPT
June 14
1:00 - 5:00 pm |
One of the most essential and intricate aspects of our practice resides how we shift our weight to move through and change our orientation during our forms. How we place our foot and pivot affects the force through the leg, into the hips and on up the body chain.
In our June class, Ms. Coleman-Brown will focus on the base of support, the lower body and how it functions against gravity, the possibilites that the bones and joints of the feet, ankles, knees, and hips provide to carry (or orient) the pelvis, and ultimately the rest of the body. This is an exciting opportunity for practitioners of all movements arts to more deeply understand the structure and flow of their practice.
Our instructor Lori Coleman-Brown is one of the top Pilates instructors in our region; she has Co-Owned and Co-Directed Pilates Seattle International since 1993.
Lori is fascinated by the human body and is passionate about studying, learning and teaching its’ possibilities, both in theory and in her daily practice as Pilates Instructor, Pilates Teacher Trainer and Physical Therapist. Lori earned her Master of Physical Therapy from Temple University and her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance from SUNY Purchase. Lori has studied Pilates since 1983 with Romana Kryzanowska, Joseph Pilates protégé and she is currently one of only a handful of Romana’s Pilates Level 2 Teacher Trainers. Lori continues her own inner journey through many forms of movement including dance, Pilates, skiing, hiking, and yoga.
An experienced lecturer and teacher of workshops, she has presented at studios, clinics and conventions nationally and internationally. She is eternally interested in how people learn. Lori is thrilled by the moment when one of her students “gets it” and treasures the moments when her student interactions take all to a new level of understanding.

Zheng Taijiquan: Principles, Postures, Pushing
With Scott Meredith
July 12
10:00 am - 3:00 pm |
"The secret of tai ch'i ch'uan is this - never apply nor accept more than four ounces of force." Zheng Man Qing
This workshop is a rare opportunity to add depth and insight into your experience of Taijiquan – even if you are a beginner or focus on other styles of Tai Chi. Scott Meredith, certified instructor and a senior student of Benjamin Lo as well as long time martial arts practitioner, provides clear instruction and one on one experience with Taijiquan as developed by Tai Chi luminary Zheng Man Qing. The workshop will include instruction and practice in the fundamental Five Principles, the fundamental Two Postures and the fundamentals of Push Hands.
Scott will show and tell the meaning of the above quote from Professor Zheng, how it applies to both form and push training and address our perpetual questions such as:
- Should we be practicing the combative applications of the Taiji techniques contained in the form?
- What is the relation if any between Taiji and Qigong?
- What is the best way to arrange/allocate your practice time?
- Must I do the entire form to get benefits?
- Isn't the Zheng shortened form less useful than the longer forms out there?
- Practicing non-Taiji calisthenics or exercises while on the Taiji path: Useful? Harmful? Irrelevant? Essential?
- Why is Zheng style or approach radically distinct from any other Taiji approach out there?
|
Scott will also spend significant time doing push hands 1-1 with each attendee who wishes to do so, whether a starting-line zero total beginner or a multi-decades Taiji or martial arts professional. Learn more about Scott at his website.
Saturday, July 12
10:00 am - 3:00 pm
$40 if pre-registration - email to: scott@rimtaiji.com
$50 if no pre-registration
All proceeds from this seminar will be 100% donated to Burma cyclone recovery through Direct Relief.
